Governments are on high alert yet again as a new strain of Covid-19 was recently discovered in the United Kingdom, causing renewed panic worldwide.

Countries like Sri Lanka which were all set to reopen their borders and possibly reduce their quarantine period from 14 days to between 7 and 10 days are now reconsidering relaxing their rules and regulations in the wake of this new crisis.

More than 40 countries have already banned travel from the UK to stem the transmission of the coronavirus variant that health authorities say spreads faster than others.

The variant has also been detected in Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia, according to the World Health Organization. In South Africa, a different coronavirus variant has been reported.

India has also suspended flights from the UK until the end of 2020, the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation announced on Monday. Passengers arriving in India from the UK before December 22 are required to take a mandatory RT-PCR test.

Looks like we are going to have a truly cold Christmas this year. Families preparing to unite for the New Year will have to wait as this new crisis is averted for good.
